When first released by the U.S. Mint in 2006, only a one ounce version was available. Designed like the Indian Head nickel, you can find an American bison on the back.

The reason for the first .9999 (24-karat) American gold bullion coin was competition – from Canada! The 22-karat American Eagles just couldn’t beat the Canadian Maple Leaf whose sales were skyrocketing.

However, only 2 years later, the U.S. Mint stopped making them! The 2008 economic crisis created such a huge demand for secure investments that supply concerns prompted the drastic move. Fortunately, production resumed in 2009!
